For much of the city's history, Charleston was more African than European.  This city was the major port for the slave trade in North America, and West African culture has had a more significant impact on Charleston than any other.  On this tour, you will learn about the earliest origins of slavery in America, the horrors of the Middle Passage, daily life for enslaved men and women in Charleston, attempted rebellions, the fight for freedom during the Civil War, the turbulent period known as Reconstruction, and the struggle for Civil Rights.  This tour will provide an honest and unflinching look into a part of the city's history that has been overlooked and underrepresented for far too long.
